The Health Insurance Authority has published the results of independent research on private health insurance in Ireland.
The survey indicates a sizeable increase in consumer satisfaction with health insurance.
The two primary drivers for having health insurance amongst respondents are the cost of treatment in Ireland and the perceived inadequate standard of public services.
The average annual cost of a policy has fallen since 2015.

Vhi Healthcare will reduce the premiums of 54 plans on 1 March 2018. Reductions will range from -4 to -7%. Vhi Healthcare will also end its half price kids offer on the “One Plan” range on this date, a new half price kid’s offer on “One Plan Family”, “Nurses Plan Select”, “Teachers Plan Select” and “Parents and Kids Excess Plan” will begin on this date. Vhi Healthcare will increase the premiums of PMI 08 11 and PMI 26 12 on 1 February 2018.
PMI 08 11 will increase from €1,183.51 to €1,211.18 per adult and from €292.81 to €298.66 per child 1-3. Young adult rates will also increase.
PMI 26 12 will increase from €1,298.17 to €1,337.12 per adult and decrease from €393.69 to €367.31 per child 1-3. Young adult rates will also increase.

Laya Healthcare will add a new benefit called “QuickCare” to their remaining 16 plans on 31 January 2018. This benefit will give members an amount towards access to a number of approved urgent care centre centres for specific treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. A Maternity Bundle has been added to a number of plans. This bundle comprises 75% cover for a range of benefits up to a maximum of €400, €500 or €600 (depending on the plan). Benefits are:

Irish Life Health will launch Better Select ILH on 1st January 2018. Better Select ILH (€1,302.20 per adult, €381.30 per child) provides cover for a semi-private room in private hospitals and the Beacon Hospital with a €75 inpatient excess per claim and a €2,000 co-payment on certain orthopaedic procedures. Day case cover is provided in private and high tech hospitals with a €75 excess per claim. 3 nights cover in a private room in public hospitals is provided for maternity accommodation....
Laya Healthcare will apply a price change across 16 plans from 1 January 2018. 14 plans will reduce in price ranging from -1 to -14% on net adult premiums. Laya Healthcare will be offering a ‘Free Kids Offer’ across 2 plans from 1 January 2018. The 2nd and subsequent child on a policy on the Essential Connect Family and Essential Health 300 plans will be free.
